The santur, also known as santour or santoor, is a hammered dulcimer believed to have origins in Persia or Mesopotamia. It features oval-shaped Mezrabs (mallets) which are lightweight and are typically held between the thumb, index, and middle fingers. A traditional Persian santur is equipped with two sets of nine bridges, providing a substantial range of about three octaves. Tuned primarily to various diatonic scales incorporating 1/4 tones, the Persian santur is attributed to 12 distinct modes (dastgahs) commonly found in Persian classical music.
